Abstract :
The chemical reactions in the CuO/Al system were studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry. It is proposed that there are two main chemical reactions in the CuO/Al system, i.e. 6CuO+2Al=3Cu2O+Al2O3 and 3Cu2O+2Al=Al2O3+6Cu. The produced particles are 0.5–2.0 μm in size, which are believed suitable to be the reinforcement particles in aluminum (alloy) matrix composites.
