Abstract :
A substituted head-to-tail polythiophene random copolymer containing alkyl and ω-hydroxyalkyl side chains has been synthesised by nickel-mediated cross-coupling of well-defined Grignard precursors. The ω-hydroxyl group is protected during polymerisation as a tetrahydropyranyl (THP) ether which is removed afterwards to give the free alcohol. The regioregular poly(3-alkylthiophenes) with hexyl or dodecyl side chains have also been synthesised and their physical and fluorescence emission properties investigated.
