Structural criteria for the formation of the stage-2 structure of intercalation compounds with sulfuric acid are discussed using different carbon materials. The formation of intercalation compounds is confirmed to be governed by crystallite thickness Lc, rather than by degree of graphitization P1 or crystallite diameter La.
