Abstract :
Stage-one MoCl5 graphite intercalation compound (GIC) has successfully been prepared in a single phase by heating a mixture of MoCl5 and MoOCl3 with natural graphite (size 85 μm). The stage structure of the resultant MoCl5-GICs is found to be dependent on the presence of MoOCl3, which is either formed by the exposure of hygroscopic MoCl5 to air or added intentionally. In order to synthesize stage-one MoCl5-GIC in a single phase, the present MoCl5 reagent has to be exposed to air with 50% humidity at 23°C for 10 min or to be mixed with 0.25 mol.% MoOCl3.
