Abstract :
Layers of two soluble poly(para-)phenylenevinylenes (PPV), one with octoxy (oct-PPV) the other with4-phenoxyphenyl sidechains (DPOP-PPV) are characterised by X-ray diffraction. The oct-PPV layer shows semicrystallinity while the DPOPPPV layer is in an amorphous state. The crystallinity of oct-PPV is about 20%. The crystalline and the amorphous state of oct-PPV show similar features: i) the octoxy sidechains separate the PPV backbones to a distance 13…16Å; ii) the PPV backbones pack close together, distances 3.8…4.5Å are observed. The amorphous state of DPOP-PPV is isotropic. No correlation between the PPV backbones could be observed. Steric hindrance, the stiffness of the phenoxy sidegroups promotes the amorphous state of DPOP-PPV.
