Abstract
A novel solvent processible silyl-disubstituted poly(1,4-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) derivative, poly[2,5-bis(dimethyloctylsilyl)1, 4-phenylenevinylene] (BDMOS-PPV) is synthesized and the light-emitting properties of the polymer are studied. BDMOS-PPV film is highly fluorescent and shows an absolute PL quantum efficiency exceeding 60 %. BDMOS-PPV shows a thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior and a polarized PL emission. Interestingly, the single layer device emits the light under both of forward and reverse bias. The light emission from the device becomes visible from 6 V. The EL emission maximum from the device is at about 515 nm. A double layer EL device using BDMOS-PPV as an emissive layer and Alq3 as an electron injecting layer is also fabricated. The brightness and quantum efficiency of the double layer device are much improved than the single layer device.
