Abstract
We investigate the transport and magnetic properties of 2D (LaS)1.18VS2 misfit compound single crystals. While the conductivity is characteristic of a hopping system with localized charge carriers, the magnetic susceptibility exhibits a clear signature of a low dimensional metal. We suggest that these paradoxal observations can be reconciled by taking into account the underlying 1D character of the t2g-t2g interactions within the VS2 plans and the strong anisotropic displacive modulation on the V site. This suggestion is supported by band structure calculations.
