Metals in medical applications

Recent developments in metallic biomaterials fall into four major categories: firstly, surface modification to enhance cell-surface interactions and biological adaptation, including morphological and chemical modification strategies; secondly, breakdown of metals, including mechanisms of corrosion and wear as well as strategies to improve corrosion and wear resistance; thirdly, biological response to metals at the cell and molecular levels; and fourthly, new alloys and designs.
