Abstract :
A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method is described for monitoring the evolution of nano-scale precipitate structures in dilute aluminium and magnesium-based alloys. Three examples are given of recent work in this field: (i) 63Cu detection of Guinier–Preston zones (GPZs) and θ-phases in Al(Cu), (ii) 27Al detection of γ-phase (Mg17Al12) formation in Mg(Al) alloys and (iii) 45Sc detection of Al3Sc formation in Al(Sc) alloys.
