Abstract
Results of studies of grain growth in α-Fe are reported. Grain boundary networks were studied in longitudinal and transverse cross-sections. Geometrical features of grain sections were measured using an image analyser. The concept of vertical sectioning and a system of cycloid test lines were used to estimate grain boundary surface area per unit volume. The results confirm earlier observations that the changes in the mean size of grains are accompanied by variations in the degree of grain size uniformity and the shape of grains. The data show that grain growth proceeds at different speeds in directions perpendicular and parallel to the axis of the specimens.
