Migration of grain boundaries under the influence of an external shear stress

From bicrystal experiments in high purity aluminium, it is shown that low angle as well as high angle boundaries can be moved by an external shear stress. The activation parameters for grain boundary migration are markedly different for low angle and high angle grain boundaries. The transition is sharp and seems to be independent of the tilt axis.
