Abstract
The plasticity of materials is usually controlled by a combination of a small number of elementary dislocation mechanisms. We recall in this article the main properties of Peierls-type friction mechanisms, local pinning and cross-slip in metals and alloys. We subsequently discuss how these mechanisms are combined in several intermetallic alloys.
