The nickel–titanium device with SME for emergency interruption of blood flow

This paper presents a unique device (variants), providing emergency arrest of blood flow. The device allows combining two manipulations: piercing of tissues and laying a clip on structure (hitherto there was no device in the world surgical practice providing such combination). The device functioning is based on one-way and two-way shape memory effects (SME and TWSME correspondingly). The device allows to stop the blood flow due to the manifestation of direct shape memory effect under human body temperature or higher if needed. When cooling the device manifests partial opening of clip branches due to TWSME. After that the clip can be removed with simplicity without any patient in trauma. Thermomechanical TWSME-inducing in the required temperature range is ensured. In order to provide the possibility of the device removing the martensitic TWSME-inducing was applied. Application of the new device excludes a necessity of structure mobilisation, and therefore, decreases the possibility of patient in trauma in the process of surgical intervention. The method of clipping structures using the new device does not demand special virtuous skills and high-tech expensive equipment. The device can also be used for tissue fixation. The device was applied in treating of seven patients and manifested fine functional possibilities.
