Abstract
Internal friction measurements have been performed with Fe–Al alloys in the temperature range of 100–960 K by the vibrating-reed technique. The concentration of Al was varied between 0 (pure iron) and 50 at.% Al (FeAl) to analyze the effect of Al. Four damping peaks have been observed. From the Snoek-type peak, the parameters of the short-range diffusion of carbon in Fe–Al alloys have been determined, while the isothermal annealing at temperatures near the Snoek-type peak has yielded information about the long-range diffusion during precipitation of carbides.
