Abstract :
Pore size data in AM50 Mg alloy die castings reported by Lee et al. [Mater. Sci. Eng. A, v. A427, pp. 99–111, 2006] were reanalyzed by using the lognormal distribution. Best fits were obtained with the three-parameter lognormal distribution. The threshold pore diameter for all cases was 15 μm which indicates that the die castings produced within the experimental region will always produce pores of at least 15 μm in diameter. The effects of process parameters on the number density as well as the statistical distribution of pore size are discussed in the paper. It is proposed that number and probability densities be analyzed separately when the effects of process parameters on pore size distributions are characterized.
