Abstract
Void nucleation within measured particle fields has been investigated using continuum and heterogeneous models. In continuum model, a normal distributed strain-controlled void nucleation rule proposed by Chu and Needleman was employed. Several nucleation strain values were examined using the measured void nucleating particle area fraction. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous model addressed void nucleation at individual particle scale over the whole population of measured particle distributions. The resulted area fractions of nucleated voids from both models were compared to synchronize void nucleation strains, which were then applied to a multi-scale finite element/damage percolation model to parametrically determine the void nucleation strain for the alloys.
