Abstract
An AlFeSiV intermetallic compounds local reinforced Al matrix composite is fabricated by pressureless infiltration technology under air atmosphere via addition of K2TiF6. The microstructure of composite presents grade distribution. The top part of sample is Al–Si matrix, and then the transition zone and reinforced region. The AlFeSiV intermetallic compounds reinforced phase produced by reaction of V–Fe powder with Al and Si in melt. The morphology of AlFeSiV phase is polygonal with size of ∼40 μm at reinforced region. The element ratio of Al, Fe, Si and V in the AlFeSiV phases are 13:1:50:34 and 64:23:9:5. Volume fraction of reinforced particles increases greatly at bottom part of reinforced region in comparison with middle part. Macrohardness of the material increases greatly from matrix to reinforced region. The wear resistance properties of composite enhance obviously in comparison with Al–13Si matrix. The assist-infiltrating mechanism of K2TiF6 is also discussed.
