Abstract :
The Snoek relaxation internal friction principle was applied to develop high damping β-Ti alloys. In Ti–Nb alloys, increased oxygen concentration caused a linear increase of peak height by a rate of 0.0196 at.%−1. Meanwhile the peak temperature and peak broadness were also found increasing obviously with oxygen concentration. The activation energy of the damping peaks was found to be about 1.24 times larger than those reported for the low Ti content Nb–O alloys. In order to investigate the effects of alloy composition on the damping behavior, the damping peaks of Nb–0.9Ti–1.7O, Ti–53.6Nb–1.5O and Ti–24.5Nb–1.7O alloys were compared. While the “js–i” complexes model was found to be valid for the damping peaks in Nb–0.9Ti–1.7O, Ti–53.6Nb–1.5O alloys, one broadened Snoek relaxation peak description of the damping peak in the Ti–24.5Nb–1.7O alloy was considered reasonable. A statistical mechanical approach was applied to analyze the broadening of damping peak in the Ti–24.5Nb–1.7O alloy.
