Abstract :
A particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composite fabricated by stir casting was subjected to multidirectional forging (MDF) at a temperature of 420 °C. The results showed that grains of matrix in the composite were significantly refined after 1 MDF pass, and gradually refined till 3 MDF passes. The evolution of particle distribution in the composite during MDF was investigated by a window technique. It was shown that MDF led to an increase of the uniformity of the particle distribution. With increasing the MDF passes, both the tensile strength and the elongation to failure of the composite are significantly enhanced till 3 MDF passes.
