Ionization energy loss by charged particles, Part II: Effects of atomic structure

The Landau distribution for the probability of given energy loss by charged particles on passage through thin absorbers requires modification with regard to the atomic properties of the sample. This modification is evaluated for nine representative elements from hydrogen through krypton and for 12 values of β from 0.3 to 0.9999. Easily evaluated approximate, but accurate, parameterizations for this Z-dependent energy loss are presented.
