Abstract :
A new type of electrostatic multistage accelerator is proposed to accelerate a high-current pulsed ion beam by using bi-directional pulses. The accelerator is simple and high acceleration gradient is obtained. To generate bi-directional pulses, two types of pulse forming lines are proposed. From the circuit simulation of the lines, bi-directional pulses are shown to be produced in every load condition. Higher acceleration gradient is demonstrated through the example of four-stage accelerator designed to accelerate a 10 MeV, 50 kA, 50 ns beam of C+ to 18 MeV.
