Abstract :
REX-ISOLDE is the planned radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE/CERN for the study of neutron rich nuclei (N=20, N=28) (Habs et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 126 (1997) 218). Radioactive 1+ ions are delivered by the on-line mass separator ISOLDE and are accelerated to 2.2 MeV/u. The radioactive ions coming from ISOLDE are first accumulated, bunched and cooled in a Penning trap. Then, in an electron beam ion source (EBIS) charge multiplication takes place up to a charge-to-mass ratio of 1/4.5. Finally, the highly charged ions are accelerated in a LINAC. The charge breeding in the EBIS allows the very efficient acceleration in the LINAC. The present paper summarizes the preliminary design study of the electron beam optics of the REX-ISOLDE EBIS.22REX-ISOLDE EBIS will be designed and constructed at the Manne-Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm.
