Stretched chromium foils

Some properties of chromium foils are summarized in connection with the production of thin taut unsupported foils. Methods for the successful evaporation and mounting of foils with diameters up to 32 mm, including mirror-flat foils, in the thickness range of 0.5–1.5 μm are presented. The causes of stresses and porosity in Cr foils are discussed and possible means of improvement are suggested.
