Abstract
Effects of bunch length fluctuation on FEL output are studied experimentally and numerically. The FEL energy drops quasi-periodically in the saturation regime except for certain detuning. The observation of the change in bunch length reveals that the elongation of the bunch length causes these dips. A one-dimensional numerical simulation can reproduce the effect of the elongation of bunch length on the FEL output qualitatively.
