  • Abstract
The feeding period 30 days prepartum to 30 days postpartum is critical for optimum milk yield, health, and reproduction. Two dry cow rations (traditional and transitional) can minimize metabolic disorders, adjust body condition scores, and shift the rumen physiology. Feeding strategies in the transitional diet include higher levels of undegraded protein, added trace minerals and vitamins, anionic salts, yeast culture, niacin, and propylene glycol. Dry matter intake can be 10–18% below target levels achieved later in lactation. Weight loss must be managed to avoid ketosis, maintain fertility, and minimize fatty liver syndrome. Recommended feeding groups would include traditional dry cow group, transition dry cow group, fresh cow group, early lactation group, and first lactation group.
