Abstract :
The paper deals with the application of engineering design grammars for a satellite design process. The situation of todayʹs satellite design facilities is addressed and the need for an automated design process support is explained. ggested method is to use graph grammars as a new representation of design. A design compiler acts as a ‘front-end’ for existing computation and visualisation tools. In this context the definition of the vocabulary and the rules of a design grammar and their relation to the syntax and the semantic of a satellite are presented. Particular sections of the design grammar are discussed and the implemented solutions are explained. The transfer of common design procedures to a rule-based design process is explained. The resulting satellite design process is exemplified through the conceptual design of a small satellite. plied method is analysed in respect to the required automation of the design process. Its advantages and disadvantages are discussed and compared to the current situation in satellite design.
