Abstract :
During the second Canadian Atlantic Storms Program (CASP 11) field experiment, detailed measurements and photographs were made of the surface precipitation. Observed precipitation characteristics include aggregates of ice pellets, needles coexisting with ice pellets, very large snowflakes, very rough ice pellets, sharp-edged crystals and mixed phase particles. The nature and formation of such precipitation characteristics are discussed and conceptual models of the development of these forms of winter precipitation are developed.
