Abstract
This paper presents a surface smoothing technique based on the level set method. The triple-dexel data used to represent the generated model in virtual sculpting is converted into distance field data by identifying spatial grid points close to the modelʹs boundary surface and calculating their Euclidean distance values. The surface is smoothed by solving the level set differential equation with mean curvature flow using a fast and robust numerical scheme. Examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the surface smoothing operation for virtual sculpting.
