Abstract :
This research was conducted to identify the use of metacognitive strategy in reading Bahasa Melayu Klasik (BMK) or known as Classical Malay Language and Bahasa Melayu Standard (BMS) or known as Standard Malay Language. This research employed three different research methods: survey, observation and interview. Three sets of research instruments were applied to collect data, namely (i) Standard Malay Language reading text and one Classical Malay Language reading text, (ii) comprehension questions, and (iii) a set of MARSI (Metacognitive Awareness Reading Strategies Inventory) inventory strategy, which comprised 30 items for measuring metacognitive reading strategy. There were 45 sixth form students used as samples. The researcher also carried out observations and interviews on three samples. The result of this research showed that there was a higher level of comprehension found in students when reading the BMK text compared to the BMS text. The finding also suggested that the metacognitive strategy was eminently employed when reading the BMK text than the BMS text. A problem solving strategy is a strategy that is highly facilitated when reading both BMK and BMS texts, and thus, this strategy influenced studentsʹ achievement in the comprehension test for both reading texts. In conclusion, the finding illustrated that the samples applied metacognitive strategy in their reading at a satisfactory level.
