Abstract :
The shape, distribution, arrangement, and stability of cells in a typical foam and polycrystal are compared, and their observed dissimilarity is attributed to a fundamental difference in the structure of the two systems. In particular, it is shown that certain features of a polycrystal may be accounted for, if the surface of its grains is assumed to be governed by essentially the same laws as that of a crystal in contact with its solution or vapor.
