Abstract
Although widespread in nature, the biomineralisation processes of silica formation by living organisms are still poorly understood. Recent advances in the elucidation of biosilicification mechanisms by combining analytical, biomolecular and biomimetic approaches are reviewed, focusing on sponge spicule and diatoms frustule biosynthesis.
