Abstract :
Wisshak et al. (2009. The ‘living-fossil community’ of the cyrtocrinid Cyathidium foresti and the deep-sea oyster Neopycnodonte zibrowii (Azores Archipelago). Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology 271, 77–83) criticized the speculation by Donovan and Jakobsen that an association of Danian cyrtocrinids and barnacles may have occurred on a floating log. This association is unlikely to be allochthonous; no convenient hard substrate (= overhang) for attachment of these crinoids and barnacles was available close at hand; the holopodid migration into deeper water occurred at about this time, but a shallow water relic cannot be dismissed out of hand; and a strict Lyellian comparison with modern occurrences is not necessarily correct. We stand by our original speculation.
