This paper discusses the history of dementia and Alzheimerʹs disease (AD) with emphasis on the individuals who have shaped its development. In addition to the best known protagonists recognized as founders of the field, it will mention other figures who have provided important contributions but are sometimes overlooked. Many of these have also become famous for work unrelated to AD.
