Abstract :
In a recent issue of this journal (C. Grosse and A.V. Delgado, Curr. Opin. Colloid Interface Sci. 2010; 15: 145–159) we reviewed the phenomenology and significance of low-frequency dielectric dispersion determinations in disperse systems. Our emphasis was on the wide potential of this electrokinetic technique for getting information about the non-equilibrium electrical double layer (EDL) formed at the interface between a (typically, but not necessarily) spherical colloidal particle and an aqueous ionic solution. Among the large variety of topics covered, we paid attention to an important point in experimental determinations, namely, the perturbing effect of electrode polarization. This is the formation of an EDL at the solution–electrode contact region, because of the blocking effect of the ideally polarizable electrodes on the transport of ions. Among the different methods proposed, we mentioned the evaluation of the logarithmic derivative, and argued in favor of the method on the basis of theoretical evaluations of the contribution of electrode polarization to the apparent permittivity. The frequency dependence of such contribution was not given correctly, as mentioned by A. Hollingsworth in a Letter also published in this issue. Our aim in the present contribution is to complete our description of the method and stress its usefulness, in view of such criticisms.
