Abstract
The influence of oxygen on the size of carbon grains produced by an arc discharge is investigated. Sizes of the microcrystallites can be controlled in the range of 10–60 Å by introducing oxygen gas into the inert gas. Effective growth conditions for C60 crystals contained in the specimen are also given. IR spectra were measured for carbon grains containing C60 crystals. In addition to absorption peaks due to C60 molecules, many absorption peaks corresponding to unidentified I R bands appeared, but not the peak at 7.7 μm. It has been shown that the peak at 21 μm disappears after heat treatment of the specimen in air.
