Annual variations of paralytic shellfish poisoning in Maine, USA 1997–2001

The Maine Department of Marine Resources has monitored the seasonal progression of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins since 1958 to ensure the safety of marine species harvested for human consumption within the State. The monitoring data presented for the years 1997–2001 show the progression of toxicity along the coast. The results show natural variability of PSP occurrences and provide the rationale for the successful detection and warning system now in place.
