Field meeting upon Pen-y-ghent, North Yorkshire: Lancashire Group, 23 September 2000

Parts of the Carboniferous Upper Visean and Lower Namurian sequences, including the Gordale/Gayle, Hardraw Scar and Main Limestones and the overlying Grassington Grits were examined by traversing and subsequently ascending the western face of Pen-y-ghent. Below the summit a late Devensian protalus rampart, a rotational landslip and several trial coal workings were passed. The karst terrain, including numerous swallow holes or ‘pots’, an associated dry valley, limestone pavements with accompanying clints and grikes together with several small ‘mini hums’ were demonstrated during the descent into the Lower Palaeozoic inlier of Upper Ribblesdale.
