Abstract :
The section of a Sigma SM1140+ fibre presents different SiC regions from the W-core to the C-coating. Nanoindentation tests across the section of a fibre embedded in a Ti64 metal matrix confirmed this. Youngʹs modulus is determined from nanoindentation measurements along the radial direction of the fibre. Youngʹs modulus of Sigma SM1140+ is also obtained from tensile stress–strain curves. As-received Sigma SM1140+ fibre was tested in tension and diametral compression. Fracture loads, deformations and Weibull moduli were obtained and fracture mechanisms discussed for both kinds of experiments.
