Ground engineering spoil: practices of disposal and reuse

This paper describes a CIRIA research project about the management of spoil from ground excavation and presents some of its results. The research included a survey by questionnaire of 32 recently completed and current construction projects, the analysis of the replies, and the more detailed study of six of the projects. The resulting CIRIA report also includes a review of the legal framework for dealing with waste and guidance about the options for reusing or recycling spoil or minimising the amount that is disposed as waste. This paper, however, presents only the survey results and lessons from the case studies.
