Abstract :
Samples of materials, of relevance to ITER and DEMO reactors, have been irradiated at TFTR in a mixed D-T and D-D neutron field over the past 3 years. The samples have been placed at various locations close to, and around, the TFTR vacuum vessel to obtain the impact of the variation of neutron energy spectrum on induced radioactivity. Intermediate measurements of decay gamma-ray activity of a number of radiated samples have contributed to an experimental database of saturation activities for aluminum, silicon, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, indium, silver, europium, terbium, hafnium, tungsten, rhenium, gold, 316 stainless steel, a vanadium-chromium-titanium alloy, a manganese-copper alloy, inconel 625, and inconel 718. New activity data for samples irradiated in TFTR irradiation-end 3 (external) are presented. Data for V-9Cr-5Ti alloy, inconel 718 alloy, and inconel 625 alloy are being reported for the first time. These measurements offer an invaluable opportunity for bench-marking of three-dimensional calculations of fusion neutron transport and activation for application to the design and regulatory licensing of large complex fusion reactors, such as ITER.
