Abstract :
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) will have a first wall (FW) made up of ∼1900 panels, each with multiple fingers of beryllium (Be) armor joined to water-cooled CuCrZr that is joined to a water-cooled stainless steel backing. The US will provide three toroidal rings of FW modules and the two-port limiters to be used during startup, and the EU, Japan, Korea, China and Russia will supply other FW modules. These ITER Partners will prepare first wall quality (FWQ) mockups, 80 mm wide with three 80 mm long Be tiles, in 2007 for a joining quality assurance test at 0.7 MW/m2 for 12,000 cycles. Sandia will test the US FWQ mockups as well as those of some ITER Partners in its Plasma Material Test Facility. This paper reports some of our recent thermal and stress analyses, notes other work to be published elsewhere and offers comments about the nature of the testing and analysis of the FWQ mockups.
