Abstract :
The effects of different interlayer types and the temperature have been investigated in order to optimize the HIP joining conditions of Be to CuCrZr. Ti/Cu and Cr/Cu interlayers were coated onto a Be surface before a HIP joining. HIP temperature was changed from 580 to 620 °C. No intermetallic compounds or defects were formed at the interface of the joint specimens. The joining strength measured by the four-point bend test and the shear test was higher in the joint specimen with Ti/Cu interlayers when compared to that with Cr/Cu interalyers and it was increased with an increase of the HIP temperature from 580 to 620 °C. The yield strength of the aged CuCrZr was higher than 150 MPa at 250 °C up to an aging temperature of 620 °C after a water quenching. It is therefore suggested that the HIP temperature of the Be/CuCrZr joint could be increased to 620 °C based on the results obtained from this study.
