Abstract :
Dipole and quadrupole lenses are most frequently used to guide and focus ion beams. In heavy ion inertial confinement fusion, pulsed beams are required. The beam duration will be of the order of tens of nanoseconds and the repetition rate will be a few hertz. Thus the magnetic flux density in an ion optical lens must be constant only for a time long as compared with the beam duration. Thus short pulsed magnetic lenses are applicable to handle the ion beam. The lenses can be manufactured favourably by thin foil techniques.
