EU fusion technology: towards a commercial power reactor

The position of fusion with reference to criteria used by utilities for investing in a new energy source and the role which has to be played by technological progress to meet challenges are analysed. The European Union (EU) approach addressing, in the long-term, the most critical technological issues for a future commercial fusion power plant and a new framework for implementation are presented.
