Abstract :
ABSTRACT: “Urban Culture and Traditional Values of Indonesian Society towards the Family Car”. Means of transportation is one of the main sustainability supports of a city and the key connecting all points in the city. These conditions form the entire socio-cultural model of utilitarian society and put private cars into one of the important icons in the growth of the city. In Indonesia, family car design, known as MPV (Multipurpose Vehicle), always occupied the highest average sales rate as compared to the other types of automobile. This study aims to determine the perception and value of the family as well as their application in a family car, then, analyzing the extent to which the importance of these values in a family car. The method of the study is qualitative approach. The result shows that the symbol of family values becomes more important and needs to be represented through the MPV type car rather than utility. Families tend to have the perception that the space in the car indicates position or strata of the family members. Moreover, there is a difference in terms of the activities carried out on the go with the nuclear family and extended family. Conversation among family members occurs when the passengers are of the nuclear family. Conversely, when a car is boarded by a large family, many family members will do activities with their own gadgets/communication devices.
