Abstract :
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a common disease with multiple depilating complications. One of them is amputation following diabetic foot ulcer. The aim of this study is calculation of prevalence of diabetic foot amputations. Design and methods: This study was retrospective descriptive study over 281 diabetic patients that were referred to hospital due to diabetic foot ulcer between 1979 and 2001. Results: During the 22 year period, covered by this study, amputation rate in our patients was 30.6% that is higher than global amputation rate due to diabetic foot ulcer. Conclusion: Systematic approach for caring is performed by a team including vascular surgeon, plastic surgeon, nephrologist, orthopaedic surgeon, podiatrist, internist, endocrinologist, trained nurse, physiotherapist, and infectious diseases specialist.
