Abstract
In his survey of the discipline, Banks discusses the evolution of international
relations theory in terms of three ‘great debates’.1 The first debate referred to the dualism
between idealism and realism and the second one referred to the behaviouralismtraditionalism
debate. The third such debate - the inter-paradigm debate - involves realism,
pluralism and structuralism. Therefore, one of the fundamental discussions of International
Relations in theoretical terms at advanced level appeared as how does ‘pluralism’ possess a
challenge to the realist school of international relations?
