Abstract :
The presentstudyinvestigatedthemodeofpresenting
onlineandofflinesupplementaryreadingmaterialsinIranianinterme-
diate Englishlearners’readingcomprehension.Thisstudyaimedtofind
out whichone,online,orofflinesupplementaryreadingmaterialscould
helpintermediatelearnerstoimprovetheirreadingcomprehensionabil-
ity.TheparticipantsofthepresentstudywereeightyintermediateEn-
glishlearnersinCaspianandHakiminstitutesinShiraz.Asapre-test,
a readingcomprehensiontestwasadministered.Afterthepre-test,the
participantsweredividedintotwogroupsofonlineandoffline.Both
groups receivedtreatment.Thetreatmentconsistedofeightsessions,
duringwhichbothgroupsreceivedthesametypeofinstruction.The
offlinegroupreceivedaprintedformofInternet-basedtexts,andthe
onlinegroupreceivedanonlinetextwithitshyperlinks.Toobtainthere-
sultsofthetreatment,areadingcomprehensiontestparalleltothepre-
test wasusedasthepost-test.Theresearchersapplieddescriptivestatis-
tics, independent,andpairedt-teststomeasurethedifferencesbetween
the twogroups’readingperformanceinthepreandpost-tests.Also,to
verifytheresultsofthequantitativepartofthestudy,asemi-structured
interviewprotocolwaspreparedandused.Theresultsofthequantita-
tiveandqualitativeanalysesindicatedthattheonlinegrouphadbet-
ter improvementinthepost-test.Thus,theyoutperformedinreading comprehensioncomparedtotheofflinegroup.Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatonlinesupplementaryreadingmaterialscouldbemoreuse-fulforintermediatelearnerstoimprovetheirreadingcomprehensionability
