Abstract :
Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of mitomycin- C as an adjunctive therapy to glaucoma filtering surgery in the pediatric age group. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, 30 eyes of 21 patients with unoperated primary congenital glaucoma dating since birth or within the first two years of life were included. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. The first group, including 15 eyes of 12 patients, underwent combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy procedure. The second group, including 15 eyes of 14 patients, underwent MMC-augmented combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy procedure. All patients were followed up for a minimum time of six months post-operatively. Results: The success rate achieved in the MMC-augmented combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy group (73.33%) was higher than that achieved in the combined trabeculotomytrabeculectomy group (53.33%). The difference in the success rate between the two groups was statistically significant (p 0.05). Conclusion: In the management of PCG, MMC can be considered an effective and relatively safe adjuvant to the combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy procedure. However, longer term follow up studies on larger numbers of patients are required to confirm these findings and assess complications of MMC application in the pediatric age group.
