Abstract :
Moderate exercises on a regular basis during pregnancy is likely to lead to an improved course of pregnancy and easier labor when compared with that of a sedentary lifestyle. So the aim of this study was to examine the effect of antenatal exercises on maternal outcomes. A convenience sample of 100 pregnant mothers was recruited for this study from outpatient clinic and delivery unit at El-Manial university hospital. The sample divided into two groups, study group who received routine antenatal care and followed the proposed antenatal exercises protocol and control group who received routine antenatal care only. Each group consisted of 50 pregnant woman. Data of the study collected through four phases. Interviewing phase, assessment phase, implementing phase and evaluating phase. The tools used were, interviewing questionnaire sheet, assessment and follow-up sheet, observation checklists, paratograph and maternal evaluation sheet. Results of the study revealed that the frequency duration of uterine contraction was faster among women in the study group than in the control group, therefore the total duration of labour process was shorter in the study group compared to control group, also the incidence of complications that occurred was lower in study group than control group. In conclusion, antenatal exercises have a positive effect on progress of labour and lowering the incidence of maternal complication.
